Perspective

The viewpoint one holds toward hiring has a lot of influence on their success.
I find it's good to start any conversation with an agreement on what is being talked about. When I'm talking about hiring, I'm actually talking about Team Building. Afterall, isn't that why we are hiring; to add members to our team, whatever that team is?
If our objective is team members, what are we saying when we say TEAM?
Per Wikipedia, "A team is a group of individuals (human or non-human) working together to achieve their goal"
A TEAM is not just a collection of people. There is an objective or purpose behind why they exist. One's success in hiring depends on whether one is merely gathering a collection of individuals or one has the perspective of forwarding a PURPOSE by doing so.
As kids, we were often taken to the beach. As we walked along many of us would pick up shells we found. Some of us would randomly be tossing pretty shells in our bucket and gather quite a few of them. Others would scan the beach with a discerning eye for just the right shell of just the right shape or color. At the end of the trip, those with the fewer but carefully chosen shells would usually bring them home and turn them into something: artwork, necklace or another project. In other words, those shells served a purpose. Meanwhile the buckets of random shell collections usually never made it home. There was no purpose for them, so they got tossed.

The first thing I think anyone doing hiring should determine is, "WHY am I hiring?" "What purpose am I trying to forward?" The answer to that question will largely determine whether the results of your hiring are the "right people" to fit your need or just a collection of random people you may have to let go of at the end of the process.
I like seeing people come together and work together to accomplish things and hope to help make that a more successful activity. If you find that what I'm sharing is helpful, I hope you'll subscribe to this blog.
If you would like to have a conversation about team building, feel free to reach out by booking some time.
Best Regards,
Dave
